Achieving zero waste is one of the global goals of PepsiCo factories. To efficiently revalorize our organic wastes, we are converting our wastes in our food factories into energy first and then into fertilizer in order to provide the nutrients they need with soil with organic based fertilizers.
In the first stage of the transformation process, we extract biogas by decomposing organic waste (potato husk, corn grain, starch, vegetable oil, etc.) from our food factories in our solid waste facilities. We use the biogas we produce as fuel and turn it into electricity and heat energy in our plants. This energy meets approximately 40% energy requirement of our food factories.
We produce the fertilizer “Naturalis”, a registered trademark of PepsiCo, by drying the pulp resulting from the biogas production process by composting and adding the minerals that the potato needs.
Naturalis, the only registered trademark of PepsiCo other than food and beverage, is used as sole fertilizer in all our potato fields. It reduces the amount of chemicals released to the soil by 40% and exports to other PepsiCo countries as well. It reduces the amount of chemicals released to the soil by 40% and CO2 emission from process by %11,5.
